How To Make Yourself Stand Out After Your Interview

Written by: Elle McCray

Let’s face it, the waiting game can seem endless... as if the interview itself didn’t already have you up all night anxiously counting down NYE style, in preparation for the big day. When it comes to interviews, especially those in fashion, the waiting period can have you glued to your phone paroling your inbox, in eager anticipation of that “welcome aboard” email. Now before you bite your nails to nubs, take a deep breath and keep reading.

TAKE A CHILL PILL.

First things first, get those bearings together. You can finally “woo-sah” because in all actuality, the hardest part is over. You may even celebrate this victory with something small to keep your mind at bay. Because it’s so easy to fall into the cycle of stressing and scrutinizing every aspect of your interview, the best way to keep your cool is to have the right attitude. Remind yourself that it’s a big deal to have even been chosen for the interview in the first place and be grateful for the opportunity.

Tip: Reach out to your references

No one likes being blindsided, so be sure to give those mentioned references a heads up.

FOLLOW UP.

The goal is to have your resume at the top of the pile, and that means standing out from all of the other hopefuls with your follow up.There are a few approaches to the art of the follow up, but above all just be sure not to come on too strong. For example when it comes to social media, do: stay connected with where you're looking to be hired on socials. This is a good way to show deep interest, while keeping your name resurfacing and relevant. Don’t: Stalk your potential employer by DMing them everyday after the interview, with hopes of being noticed. It is also good to send out a personalized thank you card or email within 24 hours after the interview. This shows a holy trinity of appreciation, passion, and character, which makes a great lasting impression.

Tip: Reach out. Social media makes it easy to find the contact info of recruiters/interviewers if you don’t initially have them to insure your follow up email lands to the right inbox.

THANK YOU, NEXT.

No matter if during the interview you were the bomb or feel like you sort of bombed, know that the verdict isn’t the end of the world. Keep an open mind and continue searching for other opportunities. Understanding this now is great preparation for the heaps of “no” that come with pursuing a dream, and in an industry as competitive as fashion, you may get 10 nos before the first yes.

Tip: Don’t burn bridges. Let’s say you didn’t get the position you were initially looking for.. leaving off on a good note can lead you to other opportunities in the future.

It’s true, after an interview it can feel like you just threw your hopes and dreams into an abyss, and I wish I had a cure for the inevitable spout of butterflies that make a home your stomach immediately following. But since that’s nearly impossible to avoid, the big takeaway from this is to stay positive and motivated during the entire pre/post interview process. Each stage is a chance for growth. The best part is, just like anything else the whole process gets easier each time, including the wait.
